Cosmic inflation is a leading scientific hypothesis describing an extremely brief period of accelerated expansion near the universe’s beginning. It may explain why distant regions of the cosmos look remarkably similar and why space appears nearly flat on the largest scales. Inflation would also have stretched tiny quantum fluctuations to cosmic sizes, creating slight differences in density that gravity later developed into stars, galaxies, and vast structures.
